Woooweee what an awesome morning it is! I may be pretty freakin tired, but I am also really stoked this morning. I was kind of bummed to come back from Snowshoe, but the snow that is falling this morning is definitely making things a little better. Watching the flakes on the cams this morning is putting a smile on my face.
Before I get to the conditons and weather this morning, I have to first talk about how awesome this past weekend at Snowshoe was. Straight up, I was a little worried about the weather and the amount of peole and what not, but I am pretty satisfied with how everything went. I met a lot of people up there and had a ton of fun (maybe a little too much actually, ha!).
I forgot how much fun the Shoe really is. I was lucky enough to be staying right in the Village, and I just love walking around through there. There is just something really cool about the vibe in that area. It’s like a mini town right by the slopes. I especially loved the fact that there is a Starbucks. I had some coffee from there all three mornings. Crucial!
As for the riding, I couldn’t have had three more different days in terms of conditons. Friday was a little soggy and cloudy, Saturday was a bluebird day with slushy conditions, and then Sunday was cold and snowy. We got a little bit of everything. For the way the weather has been this year, it was pretty amazing to me just how much snow the place still had. I mean I knew there was 57 trails open, but the coverage and base depths were still really good as well. Here in NC, I’ve ridden the same trails over and over all year, so it was nice to just wonder around riding new terrain.
First Tracks yesterday couldn’t have worked out any better. It was snowing, snow was being made, and the surface was a chalky texture. Perfect! I overheard someone saying how awesome it was to be riding before anybody else. The stoke level was high to say the least and I heard a lot of yells, mine being one of them. I’m the one yelling at 1:14. 
<<< Sunday’s First Tracks session couldn’t have gone any better as fresh manmade and natural snow made for some awesome conditions! It was hard to leave yesterday.
So yeah, it was a pretty sweet weekend. It definitely wouldn’t have gone as smoothly without the help of Mark Glickmann, Missey Turley, and Dave Huber. A big thanks to all the folks up there who made it possible. Snowshoe knows how to do it right! You can check out some pictures and read people’s comments about the weekend over on the messageboard. I’m really jealous of the people who are still up there today. I know there were a handful of folks from the messageboard that are about to hit the slopes as I type this. Yesterday morning the snow was coming down pretty good and it continued through the night. The Shoe is reporting 4" of new snow this morning, so the skiing and riding should be FANTASTIC today. I hope they take some pics and video and post it.
It won’t be awesome just at Snowshoe. Everyone should see some pretty good conditions today as several inches of snow has fallen at most of the resorts. It continues to snow this morning and we should see that continue for the next couple of hours. Even the resorts over in Virginia are seeing some natural goodness. Here’s a quick rundown of who has seen what.
App – No official number, but probably a couple inches.
Beech – 4"
Sugar – 5"
Cataloochee – Trace
Winterplace – 4"
Snowshoe – 4"
Canaan/Timberline – 1-1.5"
Massanutten – No official number yet, but they are reporting new snow.
Wintergreen – 2-3"
Homestead – 2-3"
A couple of those numbers might be a little suspect, but overal conditions today should be pretty good. As I said, you can expect snow showers to continue for the next couple of hours before things wind down in the afternoon. I was dead set on taking it easy tonight but I’m really 
considering heading out to either Beech or App after work. I wouldn’t mind a night session with some fresh snow.

It’s kind of funny that this happens right after we had three resorts call it quits this weekend. As Mike talked about on Saturday and Sunday, Wolf Ridge, Ober Gatlinburg, and Sapphire Valley have all called it a season. I figured that would happen and unfortunately I was right. It was definitely a down year for those places but hey, you can only do so much with the crummy weather this year.
IN IT TO WIN IT. That was a quote from Mike yesterday when referring to the resorts that are still making snow. Some ski areas have already called it quits when it comes to snowmaking and are going to rely on what they have. You can’t blame them for doing so as it costs a ton of money to pump out the manmade white stuff.
The places that remain committed to putting out the best product possible should definitely get a shout out though, so here it is. App, Sugar, and Cataloochee are making snow this morning here in NC. Look for these guys to stay open for another couple of weeks. Wintergreen and Massanutten are still going to be making snow up in Virginia. Snowshoe and Timberline are doing the same in West Virginia. Finally, Wisp Resort in Maryland continues to lay down the manmade stuff as well. Kudos to these guys.
