The promised cold and snow hit New Year’s Eve at many places and on New Year’s Day across much of the area. We don’t have snow totals as yet from many places because it’s STILL SNOWING!
The other big news is the massive amount of manmade snow that resorts have been able to blast the slopes with! Here are some numbers as we have them right now!
Wisp Resort in Maryland is reporting 17° this morning and 7" of new snow (8" on the week) and 29" on the season! They added a couple of trails to their open terrain and now have 22 trails open for today, terrain parks and tubing as well!
Canaan Valley Resort reported 12° this morning at 4am and Joe Stevens did some calling around and reports that they saw 6" of snow so far as of 7am. Canaan has 5 trails open for today.
Snowshoe Mountain is at 0° this AM, and they are showing 6" of new snow and there are plenty of snow drifts knee deep! They are showing 37 trails of POWDER conditions today with snow tubing fun as well. Snowshoe is now at 42" of snow on the season.
Timberline is showing 10° this morning and they are reporting 9.5" of new snow and 45" on the season. They have 8 trails open today with Powder conditions. That 9.5" of snow includes 2.5" from New Year’s Eve.
Winterplace Resort is also showing 3" of new snow and 14 trails open for today…and their popular tubing park as well.
Bryce Resort in Virginia reported no natural snow but they are reporting 2-3" of manmade snow and 5 trails, terrain park and tubing for today from 9am – 9pm!
Massanutten Resort finally got to be able to make snow and they did so, which gets them back on the path to good conditions. They still have the 2 trails open today for day skiing and their tubing hill is open as well. Look for vastly improved conditions.
The Homestead Resort is finally open! They are reporting icy conditions with one trail open until 5pm.
Wintergreen Resort is reporting 8° and they are making snow with 6 trails open.
Ober Gatlinburg in Tennessee is reporting 10° and they reopen today with 5 trails and a TRACE of new snow. They are making great snow as well!
Appalachian Ski Mountain showed a 7° reading last night and good snowfall (no official number as yet), but they also upped their base by 8". They are reporting 6 trails open, terrain parks and ice skating.
Cataloochee reported 10° and they had already seen 2" of snow by 8pm last night. Snow continues to fall so that is way under what they have this morning. They will have 7 trails today with POWDER conditions and the tubing park will open Thursday morning.
Hawksnest reports 2°. They report 3" of new snow and 6 trails plus the tubing hill open today. Their base depth jumped 10" on the max side showing some great snowmaking weather.
Sapphire Valley – NO REPORT…but we have to believe that they are making snow. We’ll get an update Thursday morning.
Ski Beech reported 5° and about 3" of new snow and snow flurries this morning. They have 4 trails available.
Sugar Mountain reports the coldest spot this AM with a minus 2° reading and 3" of new snow. They have had 8.5" of snow on the season so far and will offer 9 trails for your pleasure today. They are also offering snow day discounts even though the area’s kids are still out of school on their Christmas break. Cool!
Wolf Ridge had not updated their website as yet this AM, but according to the Southeast Ski report, they have 4" of new snow as of this morning with 6 trails, terrain park and tubing to enjoy in powder conditions today!
I am traveling today, so that’s it for now. The great news is that it is still snowing across the region and the that and some great snowmaking has made for the best conditions of the season RIGHT NOW! Get out and enjoy it and get us YOUR snow photos and videos!
Enjoy your day…
