Here we go!

The second winter storm of the season is firing up in our region as the first flakes started falling around 6:30 this morning, and the northern resorts are firmly in the bullseye with the potential for double-digit snow by the time it is said and done.

Unfortunately, it is looking more like an ice event for the North Carolina resorts and rain at Ober.

Brad broke down the details (and offered a preview of what is to come after this storm) last night.

The weather for the next few weeks is looking fantastic.

Conditions today are going to be a mixed bag as it will truly depend on what resort you are at. Several resorts were able to make snow last night to help refresh the slopes.

Here is a quick look at where we stand this morning.

North Carolina
The North Carolina resorts will truly have mixed-bag weather today. Between rain, freezing rain, sleet, and snow, conditions will vary and change really fast so be sure to be weather aware today.

App Ski Mountain – App is offering eight trails to play on with five lifts in operation. They are playing on a 24-46″ base with a groomed surface.

Beech Mountain – Beech is riding on a 24-40″ base with a groomed surface, and they are playing on ten trails serviced by four lifts.

Cataloochee – The Maggie Valley resort is reporting a machine worked surface with an 18-32″ base. Currently, they have 11 trails and three lifts open.

Ski Sapphire – Ski Sapphire has a 29″ base and they have both trails and tubing open today.

Sugar Mountain – Sugar is playing on 11 slopes today with four lifts in operation. They are reporting a 22-52″ base with a loose and frozen granular surface.

Wolf Ridge – The Wolf is riding on a 16-32″ base with frozen granular conditions. They have four slopes and three lifts open on Wednesday.

West Virginia
The West Virginia resorts are right in the thick of things when it comes to today’s snow with double-digit totals possible. Winterplace has temporarily suspended operations for Wednesday as they could see freezing rain before snow.

Snowshoe – With Winterplace suspending operations today, 4848′ is the only open resort today in West Virginia. Snow started falling at 6:30a, and they are reporting a 45″ base with a groomed surface. The Shoe has 22 slopes and six lifts in operation today.

Virginia
The Virginia resorts will see their best storm so far this year today as they will see a healthy snow. It will help set the stage for fantastic conditions for Bryce and Massanutten’s opening days this weekend.

Wintergreen – Wintergreen is the lone resort open in Virginia today. They are playing on two trails with one lift open and have a manmade surface on a 10″ base.

Tennessee
Ober Gatlinburg – Ober looks like it will see an underdeveloped snow day, but temperatures will allow for snowmaking tomorrow night. They are open noon-7p today and they are playing on five slopes with three lifts spinning. They have a 17-27″ base with groomed conditions.

Maryland
Wisp Resort – Wisp is right in the bullseye as well today as they could see double-digit totals. The McHenry, MD resort is currently offering an 18″ base with a groomed surface. They have five slopes and three lifts in operation.

One quick note for today – if you are planning on skiing or snowboarding later in the day (especially where the forecast is more freezing rain), I would recommend calling the resort to ensure the hours haven’t changed due to weather. We will try to update you over on social media as we see any changes.

That does it for today, but until next time, #ThinkSnow.
