140 days.
That is all that is separating us from the traditional opening dates for ski season at many of our resorts – give or take a day or two. Even with a little cooperation from Ma Nature, we may see the 2019-20 season open before the 140 days is up.
After the Independence Day holiday, it is crazy to think how fast that the seasons start to turn. It won’t be long until we turn the page on summer over to fall – and then winter shortly afterward.
Don’t get me wrong as we still have a lot of summer left and no one wants to skip fall in the mountains, but 140 sleeps (if all falls according to plan) is all that separates us from being able to get back on the slopes.
Time sure flies when you are having fun.
There are still a lot of summertime activities in the mountains and at our member resorts as we rapidly approach the middle of July. It is another big weekend in the North Carolina High Country with the annual Highland Games, and there are tons of over activities at our member resorts.
Don’t see your local resort or community? Be sure to check out their websites to see what they have going on this weekend so you can enjoy the beautiful summer weather.
Highland Games, Grandfather Mountain
The Highland Games are a North Carolina High Country tradition entering its 64th year at Grandfather Mountain’s MacRae Meadows.
The event – which started on Thursday and will run through Sunday – will feature everything from athletic competitions, concerts, music, dance, and demonstrations. It is one of the bigger summer events in the area, and you can’t beat the setting.
If you would like to attend, I highly recommend checking out the Highland Games website (gmhg.org) for information on parking as you may need to catch a shuttle to get to MacRae Meadows.
4848 Festival, Snowshoe Mountain Resort
There is always something going on at the ‘Shoe and this weekend is no different as the Resort hosts the 4848 Festival as an alternative to the campout festival.
During the 4848 Festival, you can listen to an eclectic collection of bands while enjoying the premier accommodations and modern amenities that Snowshoe has to offer.
Artists include Greensky Bluegrass, Umphrey’s McGee, The Infamous Stringdusters, Ghost of Paul Revere and more. Visit 4848festival.com for the full line-up.
By the Light of the Silvery Moon, Wintergreen Resort
Wintergreen is celebrating the first landing on the moon with a weekend of all things moon.
Starting on Friday and run through Sunday, the resort will have a bunch of special activities including a Moon Watch with the Charlottesville Astronomy Club, Lunar Craft Workshop and live music.
