After 17° and 18° degree nights Thursday and Friday nights and lots of snowmaking, last night didn’t follow suit as lows overnight this morning were only around 31° at the top of Sugar and Beech Mountains and that was around midnight. Lows at 7:30am this morning at both locations were around 34-36° or so.

I heard from Cataloochee Ski Area’s Tammy Brown early this morning, after Chris Bates had texted his staff that they would not be open today. After those aforementioned, marginal temperatures didn’t allow them to make additional snow to add to their base. They will now wait on the colder air to infiltrate the region Tuesday or so to resume making snow and reopen sometime next week.

Ditto that for all of ski resort that made snow over the last two days or so.

By the way, as I was driving down to Columbia to watch the Appalachian State Mountaineer football team (from my home town of Boone, NC) defeat my struggling Gamecocks, I heard from Joe Stevens, the official spokesperson for the West Virginia Ski Areas as he wanted to share that Winterplace Resort was among those resorts that made snow on Friday night, into Saturday.

The Lone Ranger (Ski Resort) Open on Sunday

That leaves Sugar Mountain Resort as the only ski area open for the business of skiing or snowboarding on this gorgeous Sunday. Sugar looks remarkably nice this morning as you can see via the screen capture from their base lodge this morning at 8am.

They will play on 6 slopes for day sessions only today.

There is cold and some snow is in the forecast, so check back later today and tomorrow for more on that and more.
