With more snow and another cold weekend on the way, it’s a good time to remind ourselves that it’s not over yet. Last week, Wolf Ridge got a couple inches of snow, mid-week, and I was really happy to get in some “lunch-break laps”.
I’ve been training for an uphill ski race this upcoming weekend at Canaan Valley Ski Resort called the (1st Annual) “Sunrise Scramble”, benefiting the Canaan Valley State Park Foundation. Here is a synopsis of the event:
It’s an uphill fun ski race. It’s a fundraiser. It’s a winter sports awareness event. It’s about being outside and playing in the snow for your health and wellness. It’s snow and sweat.
The Foundation mentions that the uphill race aligns with the three objectives of the organization. The objective that speaks to me the most, is the additional outdoor recreation at Canaan Valley State Park . . . “bring(ing) awareness to Canaan Valley Ski Resort to develop an UPHILL SKI POLICY for times when the backcountry does not allow for this type of winter sport due to lack of snow.” Uphill skiing is one of the fastest growing sectors in snowsports, and it is great to see Canaan championing this niche.
To catch you up on the latest Southeast SkiMo (Ski Mountaineering) news, this is actually the SECOND race in the region this year! The first race happened at Massanutten on February 11th, and there was a great write-up in the local paper, on the event.
I figured in the lead-up to the race, I’d give you a quick “down-and-dirty” on skinning uphill at Wolf Ridge Ski Resort . . .
Approaching the summit, scouting powder stashes, and good views! . . .
And always, the best part is coming downhill.
Wolf Ridge is open on WEEKENDS for Full-Day and Half-Day Sessions, for what looks like an awesome weekend.
