As we reported on Saturday morning, God’s natural snowmaking machine AND the snowmaking crews at several ski areas of the Southeast and mid-Atlantic sprung into action overnight and this morning.

Cold air arrived right on schedule Saturday night and that, combined with some moisture that was still hanging around created some light, natural snow. A quick tour around the area is only showing PERHAPS 0.5″ to maybe a flake or two more in the way of natural snowfall for most of the North Carolina resort mountains. Snowshoe, Timberline and Canaan Valley have picked up 1.1″ of natural snow and it is still falling as of 9am Sunday morning – especially at Wisp Resort.

However, the greater news is that the forecasted cold temperatures came in as hoped for. We are seeing temps in the low-to-mid-20s across many mountain locations and that system will remain in place bringing us temperatures this week that will be consistently 10-20° below seasonal averages.

We’re also seeing another surge of cold air arriving Wednesday night that could bring another round of snow flurries and that has everyone excited. We posted our Saturday morning report just hinting at the snowmaking crews firing up and that quickly garnered 10k or so views on Facebook and tons more on SkiSoutheast and ResortCams.com. So you guys are ready for this!

Let’s have a look around the area.

Appalachian Ski Mountain – 25° making snow and a nice dusting of natural snow
Beech Mountain Resort – 21° making snow and 0.5″ of natural snow

Cataloochee Ski Area – 25° making snow and 0.36″ of natural snow. Cat’s base area is really looking good already, so we’re thinking Chris Bates will opt for a Monday AM opening.

Ober Mountain (Gatlinburg) – 30° making snow mostly on tubing and terrain park (Trace of natural snow)

Snowshoe Mountain – 30° – making snow and although they are not reporting anything more than “some natural stuff”, we are seeing 1″ of natural snow according to early NOAA reporting. Snowshoe looks to be in store for several rounds of natural snowfall Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and that is awesome for their November 23rd, pre-Thanksgiving Day opening!

Sugar Mountain Resort – 20° – making snow and they picked up about 0.5″ of natural snowfall. The base area of Sugar is looking like there’s pretty good odds that Gunther will pull the trigger on a Monday morning opening…with an outside chance of waiting until Tuesday.

A light dusting of snow at Sugar Mountain. Snowmaking at the base looks close to being able to open Monday. Will Gunther do it? Click to Enlarge!

Timberline Mountain – 25° – They cranked up the snowmaking system while we were watching this morning. The guns are now blasting as of 9am Sunday morning. They also picked up 1.1″ of natural snow.

Winterplace Resort – 28° – They are making snow and also picked up 0.6″ of natural snowfall. Winterplace Resort’s team is hitting on all cylinders this preseason. We’ve enjoyed a lot of their new marketing shares.

Canaan Valley Resort – 25° – No Snowmaking – 1.1″ Natural Snow – thanks to David Lesher’s FINE weather data, we know that Davis, WV, which covers Canaan Valley and Timberline Mountain, picked up 1.1″ of snow and it is still snowing this morning! This morning’s snow there is actually the THIRD day of snowfall since October as they saw 1.1″ of snow on October 19th and another 1.2″ of snow the next day. SkiSoutheast.com starts documenting natural snowfall from the very first day that ANY ONE ski area opens for the season and since we know that Sugar and Cat will open within the next blink-of-an-eye, we’ll count the 1.1″ from overnight and this morning.

One of the prettiest views this morning was at Canaan Valley Resort where 1.1″ of natural snow has fallen. Click to Enlarge!

Wisp Resort – 29° and they picked up about 0.6″ of natural snow. While Wisp is not making snow just yet, they are seeing the heaviest snowfall this morning.

Wolf Ridge Resort – 31° – snow snowmaking. They have seen 0.6″ of natural snow.

No activity in the way of snowmaking or natural snow this morning:

Bryce Resort – 38° not making snow yet.
Massanutten Resort – 33° not making snow.
Omni Homestead Resort – 33° not making snow.
Sapphire Valley – 30° not making snow. They did see a TRACE of snow.
Wintergreen Resort – 30° not making snow.

We Did a ResortCams.com TOUR of all of the ski areas this morning. Check it out:
