John L. Hopkins, II, is responsible for what is now known as Massanutten VA, but it was his great-grandfather, Gerard T. Hopkins, who was the original visionary behind turning the 5,200 acres in Massanutten Virginia into a retreat. In 1875, Gerard T. Hopkins decided that the beautiful valley would be an ideal location to build a health resort, which he called Rockingham Springs. Rockingham Springs went on to serve the citizens of Baltimore, Washington, Richmond, and many more with the naturally restorative spring waters the flowed from the five springs located on the property that we now know as Massanutten Resort VA. The small health resort could accommodate about 100 guests with its hotel and several smaller builders. These guests enjoy activities like jousting, live music, croquet, hunting, fishing, horseback riding, and nature hikes, but most came to soak in the healing springs.
After nearly 40 years, Rockingham Springs was closed due to lack of business, the hotel torn down, and all but 300 acres of land sold. Almost a century later, as Gerard T. Hopkins’s son gazed out his great-grandfather’s house, an idea struck him. He worked tirelessly over the next few years, pitching the idea to potential investors and looking into ways to acquire the land of Massanutten VA Peak that had once belonged to his ancestors. Eventually, his hard work paid off, and he was able to raise enough money to purchase 5,339 acres of land that now comprise Massanutten Resort in VA at the bargain price of $288 an acre.
Over the next few years, Massanuttan Resort in VA experienced its fair share of ups and downs, evening going bankrupt at one point, but it overcame these difficulties and continues to offer visitors great Skiing in Massanutten VA, Snow Tubing at Massanutten Resort, and Snowboarding at Massanutten Virginia.
