Merry Christmas Everyone.

Today we will focus on the positive. The ski resorts that are open for skiing and snowboarding today are:

Cataloochee Ski Area with (3) trails for day skiing
Snowshoe Mountain Resort with (13) trails

Timberline has not updated their snow report as of 8:30 this morning and we called but got no answer. We’d suggest calling ahead.

Meteorologists Brad Panovich posted his latest forecast and while we are wrapping up the hopeful, tail end of this record setting warmth today and this coming weekend, there is colder air headed our way. Some higher elevations could see cold enough temperatures to make snow as early as Monday night and Tuesday morning. The entire southeast and mid-Atlantic should see lows in the mid-20s by Thursday night and the around-the-clock snowmaking and even some natural snow by Friday and into next weekend.

That can do nothing but help to attract some visitors to head to the mountains for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Weekend. The great news is that it appears now that it will be consistently cold from around December 31st through at least that next week.

Watch Brad’s forecast video…

…and then watch this NEXT video that shows JUST HOW FAST our ski resorts can ready the slopes to open. The video below is a timelapse that Kenny Griffin captured from the new Wisp Resort webcam and that timelapse shows how things can go from BARE ground to ready to ski on in less that 17 hours.

With cold air hitting the area Thursday of next week, we could and should see skiing and snowboarding happening next weekend for sure.

Stay tuned…

We DO want to take this time to extend a very Merry Christmas greeting on behalf of all of our ski resort partners and from SkiSoutheast.com. We know that there are many disappointed skiers and snowboarders across the region and you should know that your disappointment is shared by every snow lover at every ski area in the region.

We know that Winter will come around eventually and hope that you will spend some time at your favorite ski area early and often in the coming new year.

So – again…all the best from SkiSoutheast.com
