The history of Massanutten Resort VA began in the 1800s, when city-dwellers flocked to the valley to escape the unsanitary conditions of the crowded, dusty cities. Gerard T. Hopkins saw that he could profit well by creating a place for city folks to enjoy the serenity of the valley, so in 1875, he built a health resort which he called Rockingham Springs. Two generations later, Hopkins’s great-grandson, a Virginia farmer named John L. Hopkins, II, resurrected the idea and turned Rockignham Springs into what people all over the world know today as Massanutten Resort VA.
