Massanutten Resort is set to host the region’s first Skimo race next week.
Skimo, which is short for Ski Mountaineering, is a rapidly growing genre of ski racing that is designed to test endurance, skiing ability, efficiency and ability to transition to quickly move through the mountains.
The event is set to take place on an expert and beginner course with the expert course covering 3.6 miles with an elevation change of 2,267 feet. Per the event’s informational page, the Expert course will involve two-approach skin segments, a technical bootpack and two main descents down Black Diamond Terrain. The Beginner course will include one main skin segment and one main ski segment on a variety of green to black diamond terrain.
There will be three main divisions for both the expert and beginner categories. Those divisions include Alpine Touring, Telemark and Splitboard.
The race is set for a 5:30p start with an awards ceremony directly after the final racer finishing the course.
