January is going out in style.
With a fresh round of snow overnight and the return of colder air, the slope conditions for the last weekend of the month are going to be awesome.
Rain moved into parts of the area late Wednesday evening and quickly switched over to sleet and snow with a mixed bag of accumulations.
Beech Mountain was the big winner as the National Weather Service is reporting 5″ of fresh powder on the mountain, while Sugar Mountain reported 4″ of snow.
In West Virginia, the overperforming location was Winterplace. The Ghent resort also received 4″ to help quick start the weekend.
Most other resorts received from a trace to about an inch which is helping set the winter ambiance.
In addition to the snow, the mountain operation crews were able to crank up the snowmaking operations nearly everywhere.
It is going to be a lot of fun out there today.

A few notes from the morning report:
- Appalachian Ski Mountain has dropped to seven open trails for today, but that is so they can focus on snowmaking on those five closed trails. They will be open 100% again by the weekend.
- Omni Homestead will resume operations today at noon with fantastic conditions. They picked up an inch of snow and was putting down the snow earlier this morning.
- Winterplace announced on Wednesday that they would be closing at 4p today for maintenance.
- With the snow and snowmaking, we could certainly see more terrain opening up in the coming days.
Our own Brad Panovich did a quick Wednesday night update to talk about last night’s snow and a system we are keeping our eyes on for next week.
How sweet is that set-up for Sunday-Tuesday?
Granted, I know the forecast can change, but we are certainly keeping tabs on that system.
It was great to hear from Brian Duy this morning as the annual Duy/Chamberain trip is underway at Snowshoe Resort.
Brian wrote that they have had fantastic conditions this week. A couple of pics that Brian sent over:
That does it for today, but until next time, #ThinkSnow!
