It’s Groundhog Day – Literally And Figuratively

It certainly feels like Groundhog Day. Maybe because it is?

This week has been nearly carbon copy days weather wise which now that I think about it is a perfect way to celebrate Punxsutawney Phil.

This morning, Phil woke up and saw his shadow declaring for six more weeks of winter.

While we know that there are at least six more weeks of winter if not more, it is nice to see Phil agree with us this year.

For those wondering, Southeast Si has also predicted that winter will keep rolling on.

It certainly feels like winter in some locations this morning, while Thursday is bringing another round of mixed weather to some this morning.

The North Carolina High Country resorts are seeing some light snow this morning after transitioning from rain, while a couple of the Virginia resorts are seeing a mix of freezing mist and some flurries.

The Northern resorts are looking pretty clear this morning.

Snow accumulations will be on the light side – a dusting to an inch seems to be the consensus – but at least it is some natural snow.

As of 8a, it does appear Cataloochee and Ski Sapphire Valley are getting just a cold rain, unfortunately.

With all that said, it does look to be a really good day to be on the slopes.

Our buddy Bill provided a quick update from Bryce late last night as well as today’s featured image of the day. Bill said the fresh coating of snow was topping on the desert.

Here are a few notes from around the area.

  • We had a handful of resorts crank up snowmaking operations on Wednesday and that continues this morning. Look for snowmaking to continue (or in some cases begin) as conditions allow including on some open terrain.
  • Wisp Resort is set to open Chairs 4 and 5 on the East Ridge on Saturday, Feb. 4 to service trails Main Street, Highline Pass, and Eye Opener.
  • Winterplace is planning on closing tubing, Last Change/Last Run, and Woods Run on Friday for concentrated snowmaking. It wouldn’t surprise me to see a few other resorts take that approach Friday morning.
  • Omni Homestead is set to resume operations this morning for the weekend as scheduled.

Friday looks to break the trend, and the weekend is looking pretty stellar with some quality snowmaking windows along with it.

Here are some posts from the resorts from the past couple of days.

That does it for today, but until next time, #ThinkSnow!
