It’s Almost Time To Start Counting Fogs

As we get ready to flip the calendar to August, one of our favorite preseason rituals gets ready to start.

I know we write about it all the time, but it is crazy how fast time flies as we focus on all the fun that summer brings to the mountains.

However, it seems that when the calendar flips on August 1, it triggers a switch and we kick off preseason mode here around the Ski Southeast office.

It is always an exciting time.

So, you may be wondering – especially if you are new to the Ski Southeast family – what’s so special about August 1?

It goes to weatherlore as the old wise tale goes for each foggy morning in the month of August will equal one snow in the winter.
Even more, the old mountain tradition is to count the fog by placing a bean in a jar for each fog.

As we have done for a number of years, we will keep an updated count here on the site and yes we will also have a count in our own bean jar.

It gives us something to get excited about and amps up our excitement for the season even more. (For those wondering, we are getting close to the 100-day mark until the season weather permitting).

Last August, we had 24 fogs – which edged out 2022 by one as we saw 22 beans in the jar in 2022.

Here are the past few years for those wondering:
2023 – 24
2022- 23
2021 – 21
2020 – 26
2018 – 15
2017 – 22
2016 – 21

Over the month, we will be discussing and monitoring some other weatherlore as we start kicking off the dust of the Ski Southeast machine.

That does it for today, but until next time #ThinkSnow and #ThinkFog!
