Into every life a little rain must fall. Shortly after we all would have been ringing in the New Year, it began raining in the New Year. Showers are forecasted for the entire region North to South but it shouldn’t be the kind of drenching rains…although there are some thunderstorms in the forecasts as well. About a half inch of underdeveloped snow (rain) is forecasted for the Southeast and mid Atlantic ski resorts for Saturday. Most of the areas from winterplace Resort south we’ll see a little additional light drizzle for Saturday night before clearing out and being decent for Sunday. Snowshoe, Canaan and the resorts north such as wisp could see a little light accumulations of snow on Saturday night into Sunday.
Those snows are an indication of a return to cold weather beginning at least Sunday night across the region as lows in the teens are on tap for the entire area. Highs in the 20s and low 30s and lows in the teens and 20s will be the forecast for the week ahead and there’s an even cold outbreak forecasted going into next weekend.
We’ll talk more about that early in the week ahead.
Thanks to some forward thinking management crews across the region – who took great advantage of every snowmaking opportunity in December – EVEN WITH the rainy, mild weather we’re still seeing a NICE DEEP base of snow everywhere with little or no damage to what should be nice snow (wet but nice) across all slopes at all resorts.
(Check the snow report because not all resorts are 100% open, but those that aren’t, haven’t been to date.)
We’ve seen base depths drop from 5-6" in some cases but with as much as 80" of snow on the slopes, that will nothing to prevent some great coverage.
CHRISTMAS IS GONE, NEW YEARS WILL BE AFTER TODAY! WHAT’S NEXT?
You KNOW it’s January 1st because we’re now seeing the transition to MLK Weekend promotions. That’s the next big weekend that looms ahead. The all important christmas to New Year’s week was a great one even if today and tomorrow will be a little wet. It looks like the weather will be plenty cold enough to make snow all this week and that should bode well for a great MLK weekend. we’ll talk more about that later.
Right now, I’m headed out to do some dog-sledding in Canada, eh? Check the snow report links for all of the updated snow reports from your favorite hill.
