First Day of Winter Was a Success

The Cheat Mountain Magic was alive and well as we officially welcomed winter yesterday.

Snowshoe received eight inches of freshies and it is still pouring the snow this morning. It is helping to set the Christmas mood as the Christmas week crowds are settling in.

The ‘Shoe wasn’t the only one that received snow as Timberline and Canaan Valley received just over five inches of fresh powder overnight. Flakes are still falling there as well.

Deep Creek Lake near Wisp looks like a postcard this morning.

Wisp Resort also got in on the fun with three inches of natural snow that helped refresh the slopes.

Not bad for the first 24 hours of winter.

The southern resorts missed out on the snow, but a handful of the resorts were able to make snow overnight.

The best part?

This snowy and cold trend continues – especially for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Brad posted his latest weather update last night, and it is looking incredible.

That is music to my ears as the next couple of weeks could be next level.

As far as today, you can view the complete conditions over on the Snow Reports page.

Conditions on this Tuesday morning will be fantastic – especially at the places that received snow overnight.

A couple of notable items:

  • There are a couple of resorts – Snowshoe and Massanutten come to mind – that do have limited availability for today and the rest of the week. Be sure to purchase your tickets early.
  • Likewise, for tubing sessions – those sell out extremely fast so be sure to purchase in advance. Ober Gatlinburg is sold out through Jan. 3.
  • It is going to be best if you buy your ticket online before heading to the resort this season with the COVID-19 policies in place.
  • Conditions will be really nice over the coming days – especially with that fresh snowfall when we get it.
  • A tip to help beat the holiday crowds – be as close to the first chair as humanly possible. The early bird can get some clean laps without a ton of waiting in the lift line (most of the time that is).
  • There wasn’t a ton of new slopes opened today (except for a trail here or there), but we could see quite a bit of new terrain added to the mix by the weekend which will help spread out the holiday crowds.
  • Hours will be varied for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Be sure to check back for the latest hours each day.

Part of our Ski Southeast crew was over at Ski Beech Mountain on Monday and had a blast on a bluebird day. Kenny shared this run down Upper and Lower Shawneehaw.

He also did a Facebook Live with part of the crew down Robin’s Run.

It was a beautiful day with great conditions for them.

That does it for me, but until next time, #ThinkSnow!
