Today is February 1st and we successfully made it through one of the coldest Januaries on record. For the North Carolina High Country today marks the halfway point for our area resorts. If we are to believe the trends, the North Carolina High Country gets half of its snowfall for the year prior to February 1st. To this I say, heck yeah! We’ve had great snow and skiing conditions (record breaking even) thus far, and if we can expect the same going forward we will all be happy campers!

The Super Bowl is tomorrow and the conditions should be great to take advantage of the various parties going on at the resorts. In past columns we have mentioned the watching parties at Beech and Snowshoe. Well, Winterplace does not want to miss out on the fun and has quite the deal going on. Today and tomorrow, save $10 off a lift ticket or learn to ski package, or $5 off tubing. Print out the below coupon and present it at the ticket window.
While the Super Bowl is the macro event of the weekend, there’s lot s of other things going on. You can check out our events page for details, but here’s a quick rundown of what is happening this weekend.

Special Olympics Southeast Winter Games – Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding at Appalachian Ski Mountain
If I am missing anything, please let me know.
Appalachian Ski Mountain is hosting the Special Olympics Southeast Winter Games – Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding starting tomorrow (Feb. 2nd) and going through Tuesday (Feb. 4th). As a reader of this article, you already know I am a huge supporter of these events. Appalachian hosted the North Carolina Special Olympics Winter Games – Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding back in early January (right in the middle of the Arctic Vortex). Now Appalachian will play host for the Southeast games.
The opening ceremonies will happen tomorrow (Sunday) at 4:45. The competitions start on Monday from 10am-3pm and finishs on Tuesday from 10am-4pm. The events are free and open to the public. Volunteers are always welcome. Good luck to all of the athletes!
While we’re on racing, Beech Mountain recently hosted the 3rd race in the High Country Junior Race Series. The next race is tomorrow (Sunday) at Appalachian Ski Mountain with the final 2 races take place at Sugar Mountain on February 9th, and Beech Mountain on February 23rd. This series started in 1984 and I participated that first year and for a number of years to follow.

Today on the mountains you can expect peak spring like conditions. The temperatures will climb today as we’re in-between cold fronts at the moment. Depending on where you are, you could see the temperature reach the upper 40’s and maybe even 50 degrees. Make sure you pack your sunglasses and sunscreen!
