What a great way to end the work week! It’s another gorgeous morning across the region and after the last two mornings it is a welcome sight. This morning is just a continuation of some fantastic weather that we saw yesterday. Once the early morning clouds moved out, things cleared up nicely and it was a bluebird day with mild-ish temps. I was driving around with my sunroof open and my windows down yesterday. That’s actually the second time this week I’ve been able to do that.

While yesterday was really nice and somewhat mild, temperatures overnight did drop below freezing at a majority of the ski areas. There were only 4 resorts this morning that showed temperatures above freezing. That said, it looks like only a few decided to make snow overnight. Wisp, Beech, Sugar, Snowshoe, and Timberline appear to have been the only ones who decided to lay down some manmade goodness overnight. Kudos to those guys for doing so. I am thinking that all the others might have decided to hold off due to the upcoming weather this weekend. I’ll get to that in a minute.

<<< Beech made snow overnight and were continuing to do so this morning.  Should be a fun day up there!

Up into West Virginia, Timberline was also blasting away at the slopes this morning.  This image just looks cold!

Today should be pretty fun if you can get some turns in. The snow should have firmed up nicely overnight and the morning grooming should produce some sweet corduroy. There will be sunshine a plenty once again today and temps will be on the mild side. All in all, it’s going to be a good day of skiing and riding and I wish I was out there. I’m sure I’ll be staring at the cams a few times today.

Speaking of cams, I’ve been tweaking some things in the past few days with the new, live streaming ones. I’ve found a way to make them more mobile friendly and use less bandwidth. Basically, there are two different streams for each camera, one that is really good quality and one that is of less quality. Based on your connection speed, the player will choose which one you see. So if you’re internet connection is slow or you are on a mobile device like an iPhone or Android phone, you will get the lower quality stream and it won’t stutter. It’s pretty cool stuff actually and I’m still messing with things. I won’t lie, I’m still learning stuff everyday with them. If you have any problems with them or notice anything out of the ordinary, feel free to email me!

Anyways, enough with that. Back to snow stuff. I’d definitely suggest riding today if you can as the weekend doesn’t look that great in terms of the weather. We’ll see some underdeveloped snow tomorrow and part of Sunday.  There might even be a little bit of snow for the northern portions of West Virginia.

The forecast has changed though in that it looks like the bad weather moves out on Sunday. We could see snowmaking on Sunday night and Monday will see some sunshine once again. The other day it looked like it was going to be wet Saturday, Sunday, and Monday so if you are looking for a silver lining…there it is.

Next week looks pretty good right now. Sunny days with night time temps that should allow for snowmaking looks to be the trend. Those lows at night though are borderline for some ski areas so we’ll have to see how things pan out. It doesn’t look like snow is in our future for at least the next week unfortunately.

So yeah, that’s all I have for today. Enjoy riding today if you are doing so, and don’t fret about the weather too much this weekend. As always, Mike’s got things covered for the weekend. Over and out!
