A Mild Friday To Cap The Week

It is going to be a mild end to the week, but the conditions look fantastic.

Some places are 15 degrees warmer than this time yesterday morning as Friday brought some milder temperatures along with it.

The big takeaway from doing a quick tour over on Resortcams is that conditions look pretty fantastic – in part to some incredible efforts from the mountain operation crews.

While we received word Wednesday that Wolf Ridge is pushing their opening date back a week, we received the news that Massanutten is going to rope drop their 50th season with the public on Saturday.

Massanutten is also hosting a preview day today from 12p-4p for season pass holders and property owners.

The plan for Massanutten is to open this weekend before closing during the week and resuming operations next weekend.

Wintergreen also announced they are hosting a Winter Preview Weekend for Wintergreen Club Members, Season Passholders, Mission: Four’dable Quad Pack Tickets, and Resort Lodging Guests on Saturday and Sunday.

Wintergreen is also planning on closing skiing and snowboarding operations for the week before resuming operations on Friday, December 17 (weather permitting).

Thursday also brought the news that Bryce will once again be open this upcoming Saturday and Sunday.

The Virginia resort has been operating on a weekend-to-weekend basis for the early part of the season.

Thursday was a busy day.

Friday is going to be a busy day as well as we have seven resorts open for play (in addition to Massanutten’s Preview Day).

You can check out the conditions over at the Snow Reports page.

A couple of notable items:

  • Snowshoe has added three trails to the mix today as Powder Ridge, Log Slide, and Cut Off join the party. Powderridge lift is also spinning for the first time this season.
  • Tonight is the first night for night sessions at Beech Mountain. They join Sugar Mountain and App Ski Mountain as the resorts offering night skiing right now.
  • Other than a few subtle changes, the bases at all the open resorts are holding strong – in part to the snowmaking efforts this week. There is plenty of snow to play on.
  • Ober Gatlinburg’s tubing operation is going strong in part to their snow magic system. If you are planning on visiting the Gatlinburg resort to tube over the holidays, be sure to buy your tickets in advance as many sessions will sell out.

It may not be the best weather (there may be a few raindrops moving through but today isn’t a washout), but there is still a lot of fun to be had on the slopes.

Here are a couple of really cool social media posts that I wanted to spotlight before we head into the weekend.

Be sure to check back in tomorrow and Sunday for the latest as Mike takes the controls.

That does it for me, but until next time, #ThinkSnow!
