What’s New

Wisp has continued to work and enhance the on-snow experience for its visitors.

Wisp is making a big effort to improve the digital customer experience as well throughout the season.

“We are focused on delivering a better digital customer experience for our guests through the Wintergreen and Wisp mobile apps,” Director of Marketing for PGRI Resorts Lori Zalogi said. “The addition of mobile food ordering last season was a huge hit and we continue to add new features and functionality to provide our guests with the information they need to have a great day on the mountain.”

In addition, Wisp has upgraded the snowmaking system with 2800 feet of new snowmaking pipes on Squirrel Cage – a popular black diamond – along with updating the five SMI polecat snow guns with new TechnoAlpin snowguns.

The resort has also made a big effort in trail trimming on the edges of the trails to keep the tree and shrub growth back.

What They Say About Themselves

maryland ski resortWisp Resort in Western Maryland’s Garrett County is an easy-going drive of less than three hours from Washington, D.C.; Baltimore; Pittsburgh; Annapolis; and points in between.

Wisp has a long season, averaging 121 days, usually running from Thanksgiving into late March. The resort’s sophisticated snowmaking system, which covers 90 percent of terrain, accounts for the length and reliability of that season. This fully automatic snowmaker relies on TechnoAlpin fan guns controlled by weather-station monitoring computers.

Skiers and riders will find 32 slopes and trails spread over 132 acres, with a comfortable 700-foot vertical of a 3,115-foot-tall summit. Wisp is weighted toward beginner runs, with 31 percent of terrain ranked as green, including Possum, a trail that stretches from the top of three chairs for 1.5 miles, covering more than 10 acres. Intermediate terrain makes up 41 percent of the offerings, with the remaining 28 percent considered advanced.

Wisp’s freestyle offerings include the Pro Terrain Park, Rail Park, Whip Saw Terrain Trail, Kid Zones (and new Terrain Gardens mini parks-delete). The Wisp Adventure Park offers snow tubing, ice skating and the only Mountain Coaster in the Mid-Atlantic along with 3 canopy tours. Terrain is served by two quad chairs and five triples, three carpets, and four surface tows. Night skiing is offered on 90 percent of the mountain.

For those who want an even more unusual experience, Wisp added a Mountain Coaster to its repertoire of amenities in 2007 and it is open year-round! A cross between an alpine slide and a rollercoaster, the Mountain Coaster is only the fourth of its kind in the country and the second on the east coast. The familiar “click, click, click” of the rails as carts ascend a 1,300-foot long track is sure to stir the butterflies in riders’ bellies.

Snowmaking

Wisp Resort has one of the largest and most energy efficient snowmaking systems in the world! Although changes and improvements may not be visible, be assured that Wisp Resort is constantly working behind the scenes to evaluate each component of our world-renown snowmaking system.

This year the snowmaking team at Wisp Resort is testing three new TechnoAlpin M18 Fan Guns–these portable snowguns are remotely controlled and are being tested all over the mountain. Wisp is dedicated to constantly improving and expanding their snowmaking capabilities!

While other resorts look to the sky for snow, Wisp Resort’s state-of-the-art snowmaking pump house can keep the resort’s 32 ski slopes covered with snow throughout the winter. Built in 2004 on top of Marsh Mountain, the $3 million system is one of the world’s largest and most energy efficient, making Maryland’s only four-season resort the ideal destination for skiers and boarders. The airless snowmaking system is the perfect complement to Mother Nature, which already produces an average of 100 inches of snowfall in the area each year. Wisp’s computerized weather and pumping station is capable of producing 145 acre-feet of snow per day—enough to cover Wisp’s 32 trails with more than a foot of snow in 24 hours.
